A Hyundai Ioniq 5 that won’t start after sitting in Phoenix heat is almost always a dead 12-volt, not an empty traction pack. The small battery powers the computers that close the high-voltage contactors. When it drops out, the car goes fully dark even with miles still in the main pack.

Heat is what kills the small battery here

Phoenix averages about 111 days a year at or above 100F. About 21 of those days reach 110F or more. July highs average near 107F. August sits near 105F. Overnight summer lows often stay in the mid-80s, so underhood parts never get a real cool-down. The record high is 122F, set June 26, 1990. Annual rainfall is only about 7.2 inches. This is a long, dry bake, not a short heat wave.

The Battery Council International failure-mode work, via Battery University, found starter batteries last about 47 months in hot climates versus 59 months in cool ones. A 12-volt that might go five years elsewhere can fail in two or three in the desert. AAA calls heat the number-one cause of battery failure and recommends AGM batteries for hot areas.

The Ioniq 5 still depends on that small battery to boot. A DC-DC converter recharges it only while the car is on or plugged in and charging. Parked in a Mesa driveway, a Scottsdale garage, or a surface lot off Loop 101, the 12-volt keeps feeding modules, clocks, and security draws. After one brutal afternoon, or a week away, voltage can fall too low to wake the car.

The traction pack can sit at half charge. The screens stay black anyway.

How a dead 12-volt looks different from an empty pack

Press Start and get silence. No chime. No cluster. No infotainment. The fob may not pop the handles, so you use the physical key inside the fob. Cabin lights stay off. You won’t hear the usual module clicks.

An empty traction pack usually still shows life on the 12-volt side. The dash may light. You may get a low-charge warning. The car might even roll into a reduced-power mode. When the 12-volt is gone, the computer never starts, so it can’t report a fault.

Flicker, a single click, or a spray of random errors right before everything dies are also 12-volt tells. The battery is trying to launch a lot of electronics and can’t hold the voltage.

Don’t confuse this with summer range loss. Heat does cut how far the Ioniq 5 goes on a charge. AAA’s 2026 study found about a 10 percent efficiency drop and an 8.5 percent range loss at 95F versus 75F. Recurrent reported 20 to 30 percent range loss above about 95F, and about 31 percent at 100F, from 345,622 trips by 300 Phoenix-area EVs. Range loss leaves you short of miles. A dead 12-volt leaves you with a car that won’t even talk to you.

The Ioniq 5 pack size and what heat does to range is worth knowing for trip planning. It won’t explain a black screen in your driveway.

Confirm the start sequence and the fob first

Hyundai wants your foot on the brake when you press Start/Stop. Skip the pedal and you can get accessory power without Ready. Screens wake. The car still won’t drive. That isn’t a failed battery. Press the brake, then the button, and wait for Ready.

If the car is fully dark, skip this step. Treat it as 12-volt.

Then check the fob. A dying fob cell can look like a no-start if the car never sees the key. Try the spare. Place the fob in the in-car backup tray, usually in the console. The owner’s manual shows the exact spot.

Hold Start/Stop for about 10 to 15 seconds with your foot off the brake if the 12-volt seems fine and the electronics feel stuck. You’re forcing a reboot, not entering Ready. Lights may flicker. Give it a minute. Then start the normal way with the brake down. Don’t mash the button for a quarter hour. If a reset doesn’t take, move on.

The Sky Harbor week, and other parked-hot stalls

A very common Valley version of this call starts at Phoenix Sky Harbor. You leave the Ioniq 5 in the Terminal 3 garage, the Terminal 4 garage, East Economy A or B, the East Economy surface lot, or the 24th St. station lot. You fly for a week. Garage decks and pavement stay hot. Overnight lows in the mid-80s don’t reset the battery.

Level 2 charging is confirmed in the Terminal 3 garage on Level 1 west side, Level 3, and Level 7. It’s also in the Terminal 4 garage on Level 4 east end, zone B, and at the 24th St. station. EVPassport installed charging at PHX in 2022. The PHX Sky Train links East Economy to the terminals. Plugging in can keep the traction pack from sitting low. It doesn’t always keep the 12-volt healthy if the car is off and the DC-DC isn’t running.

You return, tap the handle, and nothing happens. The same stall shows up after a long park near Chase Field, a work trip that left the car in Tempe or Chandler, or a Cactus League day at Sloan Park in Mesa. A delivery van that died at Sky Harbor is the same fork: jump the 12-volt, add energy, or tow.

Overnight charging at home can keep the 12-volt from sitting drained. APS markets the R-EV plan as EV Overnight Charging from 11pm to 5am on weekdays. It also runs APS Smart Charge. SRP’s Electric Vehicle Price Plan closed to new enrollment after a February 2025 board vote. Existing SRP customers may stay through the November 2029 billing cycle. If the Ioniq 5 is actually charging overnight, the DC-DC can top the 12-volt. If it’s just sitting unplugged in a hot garage, the small battery is on its own.

Newer East Valley housing in Gilbert, Queen Creek, and San Tan Valley often has home Level 2, so many no-starts happen after a parked day away from that wall unit. Older West Valley streets still see the same 12-volt failure. The battery doesn’t care when the house was built. It cares about 110F.

Jump the Ioniq 5 from the underhood terminals

You don’t connect to the traction pack. You don’t have to pull the 12-volt out of its tray to get a first wake. Hyundai puts jump posts under the hood.

Open the hood. On the driver’s side, find the black fuse-box cover. Lift it. Look for a red cap or a marked positive terminal. That’s where the red clamp goes.

The black clamp goes to unpainted metal on the body or a marked ground point. Don’t put it on the battery’s negative post if you can see one. You want the spark away from the battery.

Order matters. Red on the Ioniq 5 first, then red on the jump pack or donor car. Black on the donor next. Black on the Ioniq 5 ground last. Wait a couple of minutes so the 12-volt can take current. Foot on the brake. Press Start. Look for Ready.

Once it wakes, leave it in Ready for several minutes. Let the DC-DC push charge back into the 12-volt before you shut down. A two-second start and another long sit will put you in the same dark cabin.

If it wakes, then dies again

A jump that lasts a few minutes and then folds is a failed 12-volt, or a DC-DC that isn’t feeding it. Drive to a shop that can test and replace the small battery. Don’t make the I-17 climb toward Anthem and New River your test. Don’t use the Beeline grades toward Fountain Hills as a confidence run.

Catch the early tells if you still can. Slow locks. Random warnings. A second press needed to wake. Those show up in signs your EV 12-volt needs replacement before it strands you.

Hyundai and Kia factory roadside have a documented pattern of trouble getting a dead EV towed. If you call the manufacturer, ask for a flatbed and say the 12-volt may be dead. Don’t assume they’ll jump it or add charge at the car.

Arizona has no annual safety inspection. Battery EVs are exempt from emissions testing in Maricopa County Area A. Nobody at a state lane is going to flag a weak 12-volt for you. The first notice is often a silent Start button.

What state roadside will and won’t do

Arizona DPS Roadside Motorist Assistance will change a tire, bring gasoline or diesel, jump a conventional 12-volt, add water, and call a tow. In 2018 it helped 75,235 motorists statewide. Its published materials name gasoline and diesel. They say nothing about charging an EV or recovering a car that is out of traction charge.

ADOT’s Incident Response Unit covers Phoenix-area freeways from 5am to 8pm on weekdays. It’s a 14-member unit, sponsored by State Farm since 2020, with 10,400-plus responses since October 2019. It clears crashes and debris, changes tires, and helps stranded motorists. It also doesn’t advertise EV charging.

A dark Ioniq 5 on I-10, Loop 202, or the US-60 Superstition Freeway may get a conventional jump if a unit stops. It won’t get a Level 2 charge from those programs. If the 12-volt is the problem, a jump may be enough. If the traction pack is empty, you still need a mobile charge or a tow.

If you’re in the traveled lanes, ARS 28-871 says get off the roadway when it’s practical. A vehicle disabled so badly it can’t move is exempt. You still leave room for traffic and stay visible. ARS 28-775, the Move Over law, is why an operator working a shoulder needs other drivers to change lanes or slow down.

Hazards on. Shoulder if you can. Then sort 12-volt versus empty pack. Don’t walk into a live lane to inspect the charge port.
