Heat is what takes the ZDX down, not the big pack

Phoenix averages about 111 days a year at or above 100 degrees. About 21 of those days reach 110 or more. July highs sit near 107 degrees, and August is near 105. Overnight summer lows often stay in the mid-80s, so the small battery never cools.

Battery Council International work, via Battery University, tracked starter-battery life in heat. Those batteries last about 47 months in hot climates. In cool climates they last about 59 months. AAA names heat as the top cause of battery failure. A 12-volt might last five years in a mild city. In the desert it can fail in two or three.

The ZDX still needs that accessory battery to boot. It runs the door handles and the screens. It also runs the contactor that ties the Ultium pack to the car. A DC-DC converter only tops the 12-volt up while the car is on. It also recharges during a session that is actually charging. What a ZDX no-start looks like from the curb

A ZDX that won’t start after a hot park often looks fully dead. Cabin lights stay off, and the infotainment never boots. Last night’s fob now needs to sit against the door. You press the brake and hear no click. A fading fob over the prior week is an early hint.

A ZDX left at Phoenix Sky Harbor while you flew out fits that pattern. A week in a hot garage often drains the 12-volt, and the car refuses to wake. Level 2 charging is confirmed in the Terminal 3 and Terminal 4 garages. The 24th St station has Level 2 charging too.

A full Ultium pack can’t wake a dead 12-volt

New EV owners expect the big battery to run everything, and it doesn’t. The traction pack can read near 100 percent. The car still won’t go to Ready. The 12-volt is a conventional low-voltage battery, lead-acid or lithium. It’s like the one in a gas Acura. It doesn’t move the wheels, and it only authorizes the high-voltage system.

No 12-volt power means the contactors stay open. The ZDX can’t start, often can’t charge, and may not unlock. That’s a no-start problem, not an empty pack. If the dash lights up and range is near zero, that’s a different problem. You need miles on the traction battery, not a jump. Arizona DPS Roadside Motorist Assistance will jump a conventional battery. It can add gasoline or diesel and change a tire. ADOT’s Incident Response Unit covers Phoenix-area freeways from 5am to 8pm on weekdays. Neither program advertises bringing an EV a charge.

The ZDX is an Ultium cousin, not a Honda EV under the skin

Acura built the ZDX with General Motors on Ultium BEV3. That family includes the Honda Prologue and the Chevy Blazer EV. It also includes the Chevy Equinox EV and the Cadillac Lyriq. The Prologue is the closest mechanical twin, with the same 12-volt gate.

Jumping a ZDX from the hood terminals

The 12-volt lives under the hood with labeled jump terminals nearby. You’re waking the low-voltage system, not the drive pack. Never clamp onto the orange high-voltage cables at any point. If the interior is fully dead, the hood release inside may not work. Check the owner’s manual for emergency access on your model year.

Connect a lithium jump pack to the labeled positive and negative points. Give the electronics a minute or two to recover, then try start.
