You stall on hot I-10 with the pack at zero. AAA vs mobile EV charging is a tow versus a charge on that shoulder. Arizona’s free motorist vans bring gasoline and jumps. They don’t plug a Level 2 cable into your port. An independent mobile operator does.

Arizona’s free vans still think you’re a gas car

Arizona does run free motorist help. That still won’t put a Level 2 charge in your port.

Arizona DPS Roadside Motorist Assistance works statewide. Crews change tires and bring gasoline or diesel. They jump-start dead batteries, add water, and call tows. In 2018 the program helped 75,235 motorists statewide. Its published pages name gasoline and diesel. They don’t mention charging an EV.

ADOT’s Incident Response Unit covers Phoenix-area freeways. Published hours are 5am to 8pm on weekdays. It changes tires and helps stranded motorists. No EV charge is on that list either.

So the van can save a 12-volt morning. It can’t refill a pack. See Tesla flat tire coverage, and the Arizona motorist help gap.

Club roadside still ends in a flatbed

AAA was built around gas cars: fuel, jumps, and tows. Report a dead EV, and the usual dispatch is a flatbed. Electric drivetrains generally need a flatbed, not a wheel-lift. The truck loads the car. You’re taken to a charger or a shop. Then you wait for the pack.

We could not confirm a published Arizona AAA promise to bring Level 2 charging to the car. Ask AAA what your card covers at your exact pin. Don’t assume a membership is a portable charger.

Tesla roadside tows to a Supercharger or a service center. It doesn’t charge you on site. Ford tows to the nearest charger, home, or dealer within 50 miles. Both move the car. Neither fills it on the shoulder. Compare those paths in Tesla rescue in Phoenix: AAA or a mobile charge.

Heat is what empties Valley packs

Phoenix averages about 111 days a year at or above 100F. About 21 days reach 110F or more. July highs average near 107F. August highs sit near 105F.

AAA’s 2026 study found about a 10% efficiency drop at 95F versus 75F. Range fell about 8.5% in the same test. Recurrent used 345,622 trips by 300 Phoenix-area EVs. That dataset showed 20 to 30% range loss above about 95F. Loss was near 31% at 100F.

Loop 101 Agua Fria on the west chews miles in AC. So does Loop 101 Price on the east. US-60 is Grand Avenue to the northwest and the Superstition Freeway to the east. I-17 north toward Anthem, New River, and Black Canyon City climbs. ADOT posts a 6% maximum grade on northern I-17.

An empty pack is then a charging job. It isn’t a shop job.

What the operator brings, and what we don’t

Charge Pro PHX is a referral line. We match stranded EV drivers with independent local operators. We hold no trade license. We own no trucks. The operator quotes you before starting and bills you directly.

The pro we send brings a 240V Level 2 source to the car. Teslas use a native NACS plug. Other brands use a CCS or J1772 adapter. Charging typically adds about 10 to 20 miles of range. That happens in 15 to 30 minutes of charging. That window is charging time, never an arrival time.

That’s mobile EV charging in one picture.

Operators also jump or replace a dead 12-volt on site. Heat kills those small batteries. Battery Council International work, via Battery University, found starter batteries last about 47 months in hot climates. The same work found about 59 months in cool climates. AAA calls heat the number-one cause of battery failure. In an EV, a dead 12-volt strands you even with a full traction pack. It runs the door handles, the screens, and the contactor that closes the main battery.

Sky Harbor makes that concrete. Level 2 charging is confirmed in the Terminal 3 and Terminal 4 garages. It’s also at the 24th Street station. A car left a week in a hot garage can still wake with a dead 12-volt.

If the traction pack is empty, ask for out-of-charge recovery. A jump won’t fill that pack.

When you still want the hook

If you need the car at a body shop, you want a flatbed. Collision damage and a tire that won’t take a spare are tow jobs. DPS and ADOT will change a tire. Dealer warranty work needs a specific bay, not a short top-up.

Keep AAA for those days. Call a mobile operator when the car is healthy and empty. One product moves a broken car. The other feeds a fine one.

Arizona sets no statewide tow-rate cap. Cities and counties may set local maximums. Private tows need the property owner’s written authorization or a police request. That’s ARS 9-499.05 in cities and ARS 11-251.04 in counties. Ask who authorized the hook before you sign.

What moves a mobile quote

There’s no membership on our side. You pay the operator for the visit. Distance moves the quote. Time of day moves it. How much range you need moves it. A short hop in Tempe isn’t a long run toward Gila Bend or Wickenburg. Grade on the Beeline toward Fountain Hills can change how much charge you ask for. The operator prices the job before any cable goes in. Confirm that figure before they start.

We don’t publish rates. We won’t invent club dues or per-mile tow numbers either. Read how mobile EV charging is quoted to Phoenix area drivers.

Shoulder rules you actually need

You may not stop on the traveled part of a highway if you can get off it. ARS 28-871 applies outside a business or residence district. A vehicle disabled so badly it can’t be moved is exempt. Leave room for traffic to pass. Be visible 200 feet in each direction. Hazards on.

ARS 28-775 is the Move Over law. When you approach a stopped car with flashing lights, move over a lane if you can. If you can’t, slow down.

Arizona has no toll roads. ADOT confirms that. Texts about unpaid Arizona tolls are scams. Solo HOV access for alternative-fuel plates ended September 30, 2025.

Factory scripts still don’t charge the port

Tesla won’t charge on site. Rivian and Hyundai/Kia owners have documented trouble getting a dead EV towed. Ask for a tow by name if that’s the path you want.

Arizona had about 141,800 battery EVs as of 2025, per DOE AFDC.

APS serves large parts of Phoenix, plus Surprise, Goodyear, and Buckeye. SRP serves much of Mesa and shares the East Valley. Confirm your own address. APS markets the R-EV plan as EV Overnight Charging, 11pm to 5am weekdays. SRP’s Electric Vehicle Price Plan closed to new enrollment after a February 2025 board decision. Those plans help at home. They don’t help on I-10.

Gilbert’s housing stock is new. Maricopa the city sits in Pinal County, not Maricopa County. Sun City housing is old. The roadside call still happens in both places. After Chase Field or Mortgage Matchup Center, a car that won’t wake is often a 12-volt. Same story after State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

The operator we send handles Tesla and every major EV brand.

Keep both numbers, use the right one

Keep the club card for flats, lockouts, and crash tows. Remember DPS and ADOT on a freeway shoulder. Call a mobile operator for range or a 12-volt wake-up.

Start with EV roadside assistance in Phoenix when the pack is empty. The metro map is at EV charging across the Phoenix area.

We serve every city in the county. Mesa, Scottsdale, Tempe, Gilbert, Chandler, Glendale, Peoria, Surprise, Goodyear, and the rest of the Valley. We connect you. The independent operator does the work.

When you’re ready, call (602) 932-0920. Give the matcher your car, your plug, and your pin. The operator quotes you before they start.

Frequently asked questions

Will Arizona DPS charge my EV on the shoulder?

No published DPS Roadside Motorist Assistance page promises a Level 2 visit. The program lists gasoline, diesel, jumps, tires, water, and tow calls. If you need range, ask for a mobile operator.

Does AAA include an on-site EV charge in this metro?

Confirm it with AAA for your card and your pin. We could not confirm a published Arizona AAA promise to bring Level 2 charging to the car. Club help commonly tows a dead EV. An independent operator is who quotes an on-site charge.

What should I do first on I-10 or Loop 101?

Get off the traveled lanes if you can. Hazards on. Stay visible 200 feet each way. Then pick the failure. An empty traction pack wants a charge. A silent 12-volt wants a jump or a replacement. A damaged car wants a flatbed.
