A charge dies at 44% after a Loop 202 run. The next morning it quits at 69%. In the Phoenix area, that scatter is the pack protecting itself in 100F sun. The car’s following heat, not a percentage you can set.

The number moves because the pack is hot

Phoenix sees about 111 days a year at or above 100F. About 21 of those hit 110F or more. Those counts come from NOAA normals through NWS Phoenix. July highs sit near 107F, and August stays near 105F. Summer nights still hang in the mid-80s, so the pack rarely gets a full cooldown.

Your traction battery starts the session already warm. Charging adds more heat on top of that. The battery management system watches pack temperature, not the percent on the dash. It slows the rate first. If the pack keeps climbing, it can pause the session until things cool.

That pause lands wherever the pack happens to be. You might see 41% after a noon I-10 run. You might see 72% after a shaded overnight. Same car and charger, different heat in the cells.

Recurrent looked at 345,622 trips from 300 Phoenix-area EVs. Above about 95F, those cars lost 20 to 30% of range. Near 100F, loss sat around 31%. AAA’s 2026 study found about a 10% efficiency drop at 95F versus 75F. Range loss in that study sat around 8.5%.

A charge limit doesn’t hop around

Open the app or the center screen before you blame heat. Most EVs let you cap daily charging in the 70 to 90% band. That protects long-term pack health, and a road-trip full charge is the exception.

If the car always stops at the same number, you set that number. A limit of 80% won’t read 53% on Tuesday and 81% on Thursday. Random stops jump, and they don’t match the slider.

Valley miles load the pack before you plug in

A cool garage in Gilbert or Surprise is one starting point. An open lot after a commute is another. A car that baked in 100F sun starts hotter than one that sat in shade.

Northbound I-17 toward Anthem, New River, and Black Canyon City climbs hard. ADOT posts a 6% maximum grade on that northern stretch. Forum drivers have reported roughly 481 Wh/mi going up versus 293 coming down. That’s about 40% more energy uphill. You arrive warmer than the dash made it sound.

The Beeline toward Payson posts a 7% grade into Slate Creek Canyon. US-60 east through Apache Junction toward Superior works the pack the same way. I-10 south toward Casa Grande is flatter, but July sun still cooks the cells.

Park at Sky Harbor after a week away and the start can still go badly. Level 2 stalls are confirmed in the Terminal 3 and Terminal 4 garages. There’s also charging at the 24th Street station. A car that sat in a hot garage may still refuse a clean session. Tesla Sentry Mode and Cabin Overheat Protection keep drawing while you’re gone. Don’t race from a hot freeway onto a DC fast stall. Give the cells a few minutes first.

The stall can derate too

If home Level 2 finishes fine, the car can take a charge. If only the public fast stall quits early, look at the cabinet. Shared power and the stall’s own heat can cut the session. That’s a station problem, not a charge-limit problem.

Give the pack a short rest

After a hot drive, let the car sit 15 to 20 minutes. Do that before a DC fast charge. Shade or a garage helps more than people expect when July is near 107F. Early morning or late evening sessions dodge the worst of the 100F hours.

A monsoon storm is a different interrupt. Official season runs June 15 to September 30. Water in the port can stop a session for a reason that is not thermal.

When heat is not the story

A stop on a cool morning in shade is a different case. If that pattern repeats after an easy local drive, look past the weather.

A weak 12-volt can drop the charging computer mid-session. That can happen even when the traction pack is fine. The small battery runs the contactors and the screens. Heat shortens 12-volt life in the desert. Battery Council International work, via Battery University, timed starter batteries in heat. A true BMS fault or a failing onboard charger is less common. It also doesn’t care if the car sat in shade. If every session dies the same way in every weather, have a shop read it. Arizona DPS Roadside Motorist Assistance will jump a 12-volt and bring gasoline or diesel. Its published materials don’t mention charging an EV. ADOT’s Incident Response Unit on Phoenix-area freeways is the same story. An independent operator is who actually brings a 240V source to the car.

If the short session leaves you short of miles

A pause at 50% can still get you home from Tempe or Mesa. It may not cover a late run toward Wickenburg or Gila Bend. Don’t guess a distance to the next public stall. Check your apps, then decide if you can move.

If you’re already on the shoulder, stay off the travel lane when you can. ARS 28-871 lets a disabled vehicle stay put when it can’t be moved. Leave room for traffic and stay visible. Other drivers must move over or slow under ARS 28-775.
